Counting the time between two dates

Working out the gap between two dates sounds simple but hides a few traps, which is why a calculator is more reliable than counting on your fingers. The tool above gives the number of days, weeks, months and years between any two dates, and it handles the awkward parts automatically: months have different lengths, and leap years add a 29th of February every four years, both of which throw off mental arithmetic over longer spans.

Inclusive or exclusive. The common source of confusion is whether to count both the start and end dates. Is a hotel stay from Monday to Wednesday two nights or three days? Depending on what you are measuring, you may want the raw gap or the gap plus one, so decide which convention fits, especially for things like notice periods, contract terms and return-by dates where a day either way matters.

Where it is useful. Beyond curiosity ("how many days until the holiday?"), date maths answers real questions: someone's exact age, how long until a deadline, how many days you have been at a job, the anniversary of an event, or how many weekends fall before a due date. For work planning, counting business days rather than calendar days gives a truer picture of the time you actually have, since weekends and holidays are not working time.
