Converting between units of measure

Most of the world uses the metric system (metres, kilograms, litres, Celsius), while the United States and a few others use imperial or US customary units (feet, pounds, gallons, Fahrenheit), so converting between them is a daily need for travel, recipes, engineering and shopping. Conversion works by multiplying by a fixed factor: one inch is exactly 2.54cm, one kilogram is about 2.205 pounds, one mile is 1.609km. The tool above handles length, weight, volume, temperature and more.

Temperature is the odd one out. Most conversions are a simple multiplication, but temperature scales do not share a zero point, so you cannot just multiply. Celsius to Fahrenheit is (°C × 9/5) + 32, and back again is (°F − 32) × 5/9. That offset trips people up, which is why a calculator is safer than mental maths for temperatures.

Why getting it right matters. Unit mistakes are not just inconvenient; a famous NASA Mars orbiter was lost because one team used metric and another imperial. In everyday life the stakes are lower, but a mixed-up conversion still ruins a recipe or a DIY cut. When precision counts, convert with the exact factor rather than a rough rule of thumb.
