When a random picker actually helps
A spinning wheel makes a genuinely random choice, and there are more good uses for that than it first appears. It settles decisions fairly when no option is clearly better (what to eat, who goes first, which chore falls to whom), removing the bias and the arguing. It runs giveaways and prize draws transparently in front of an audience. And teachers use it to call on students at random so nobody can predict their turn.
Why randomness is fairer than it feels. When people take turns "picking", hidden biases creep in; a truly random draw gives every option exactly the same chance, which is why raffles and lotteries use it. For any decision where fairness or the appearance of fairness matters, letting a random picker decide is more defensible than one person choosing.
Using it well. List every option once for equal odds, or repeat an option to weight it more heavily. For decisions that actually matter, use a random pick to break a genuine tie between options you are already happy with, not to dodge a choice you should think through.
