Lorem ipsum is scrambled, meaningless placeholder text used to fill a design before the real words are ready. It is based on a passage from a work by the Roman writer Cicero, jumbled so it is not readable Latin, and it has been the standard filler in typesetting and design for centuries. The tool above generates as much of it as you need, in paragraphs, sentences or words.
Why not just type "text text text". The point of lorem ipsum is that it looks like natural language, with realistic word lengths and sentence rhythm, so a layout looks the way it will with real content, without anyone being distracted into reading it. Repeated real words or obvious English pull the eye and hide typographic problems that placeholder text would reveal.
When to drop it. Placeholder text is for early layout only; designing entirely around lorem ipsum can hide the fact that real copy is longer, shorter or a different shape than the dummy text, which then breaks the design. Bring in real or representative content as early as possible, and treat lorem ipsum as scaffolding, not a substitute for thinking about the actual words.
