What "ideal weight" actually means

Ideal body weight is an estimate of a healthy weight for your height, and several formulas exist, the Devine, Robinson and Hamwi equations among them, which is why different calculators can give slightly different numbers. They typically start from a base weight at a set height and add a fixed amount per inch or centimetre above it, adjusted for sex. The result is a target, not a precise line.

Treat it as a range, not a single number. A healthier way to think about it is the weight range that corresponds to a BMI of roughly 18.5 to 25 for your height, which gives a band of several kilograms rather than one figure. Where you sit within that band depends on your build, muscle mass and personal health markers.

The limits. Like BMI, these formulas ignore body composition, so a muscular person may sit above their "ideal" weight while being very lean and healthy. Frame size and age also shift what is realistic. Use the number as a rough goalpost, and judge progress by how you feel, your fitness and health markers as much as the scale.
