How to work out a discount

A percentage discount is the fraction taken off the original price. To find the sale price directly, multiply the original by (1 minus the discount): a 30%-off item at $80 costs $80 × 0.70 = $56, and you saved $24. To find just the saving, multiply the price by the discount as a decimal. The calculator above shows both the amount saved and the final price.

Stacked discounts do not simply add. An extra "20% off" applied on top of "30% off" is not 50% off. The second discount comes off the already-reduced price: 30% off then 20% off leaves you paying 0.70 × 0.80 = 0.56 of the original, a 44% total discount, not 50%. Coupon stacking almost always saves less than the two headline numbers suggest.

Sanity-check the "was" price. Retailers sometimes inflate the original price so the discount looks bigger. The figure that matters is what you actually pay versus what the item sells for elsewhere, not the percentage on the sticker. Use the calculator to compare the real final prices of competing offers.
